Hello! Mrs L here... I'm sure we all remember that
gealach_ros kindly posted an article about Merlin being filmed in the Forest of Dean recently. Mention was made of Clements End - a new location for us location geeks - as well as dear old Puzzlewood. You can see a copy of the article in this post.
Well, I was delighted to be contacted by Emma, one of our lovely lurkers, who had promptly visited Clements End and took photos. Not only that, but she kindly gave me permission to post her report and images to this community and the website. How cool is that! (I just love this community...)
As you'll remember, the article mentioned 'a team of horses' as well as the felling of a tree. I wonder if the horses were from our friends at Dolbadarn Film Horses...
Emma said: 'As I live in South Wales near Caerleon I usually spend quite a bit of time looking up many of the Merlin locations when I get a chance and decided to go find Clements End today.
'Let me start by saying that even by using Google Maps I had to resort to my sat nav in the end as Clements End is a pain in the bum to find (mainly due to the fact that milestone walk wasn't signposted) so if you decide to go yourself its the first right before the right turning for 'the rocks'. Then if you carry on following the normal directions Clements End is easy to find and about 5 mins away from this point on the outskirts of an housing estate.
'There's a small pull-in near the end of the route in front of a forested area which is where I guessed they'd filmed so I jumped out and had a look. In the wooded area there were two large trees that were felled, and I gathered this was what they may have used from the report in the paper. There was also evidence that horses had been along the pathway, so being the thorough fangirl I took a picture of this too just in case it was related. I followed the path a little way down but after a while I figured if anywhere the most likely location would have been where I started (where the felled trees are) as this was quite secluded from the nearby road and was a fairly open space to film in - also this was where the horse tracks were!
'There was striped tape tied to two particular trees. I wonder if they'd marked them off for shooting angles? They were either side of the log that had been felled - but that's only me speculating of course. I have to say I'm glad no one stumbled across me while I was taking pictures of the ground as I did look slightly mad at that point.
'I got back in the car after this but noticed just a bit further a large tree had been cut down there too so I trekked off again and took another picture just in case but I have to say this was very unlikely to be used as it was right next to the road and rather inaccessible on foot, but It couldn't hurt until we get some footage to compare it too. The things we do for our show :)
'Anyway I hope this was helpful and not too rambling...'
Clearing by the log.
Fallen tree.
Horse tracks! :-)
Outside looking in.
Trail with horse tracks.
(It's Mrs L again now.) Thank you so much, Emma! I really appreciate your thorough detective work. ♥
I have posted some of Emma's photos here, but will post them all on the website later today.

Date: 2010-03-17 01:16 pm (UTC)I'm very jealous of those that get to visit these areas, but so grateful that everyone shares stories and pics like this. When I make the long flight from Australia later this year I'm planning on visiting as many locations as I can. :)
