There's a new ABC tv series called Galavant and I was watching the trailer and just noticed so many Merlin locations. I always get excited about stuff like that! I was able to spot Caerphilly and Cosmeston Medieval Village and I'm sure I'm missing a lot. Anyway, it looks completely ridiculous. But in a good way.

5 friends, 2 dogs (named Merlin and Arthur *lol*) and I went to Wales from 6th - 13th July to hunt down some Merlin filming locations. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] merlinlocations and its fabulous location hunters we had an amazing time and found everything on our list (which wasn't complete at all, but it was a start ^^). And now, that I've completed all the entries of our first Merlin location trip at my livejournal, I'd like to post the links here. :)

Every pic of mine comes with a screenshot of the series, so hopefully everything will be clear. But if there're any questions, I'm more than happy to answer everything I can. :D

Day 1: River Ely, Castell Coch, The Blue Pool, Three Bears Caves
Day 2 + 4: St. Donat's Bay, Dunraven Bay, Margam Country Park, Glastonbury Tor
Day 3: Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Raglan Castle
Day 5 (part 1): Caerphilly Castle
Day 5 (part 2): Comeston Medieval Village, Candleston Castle
Day 6: Goodrich Castle, The Amazing Hedge Puzzle, Speech House Lake
Day 7: Chepstow Castle, Huntsham Court Farm

I think we really did a lot for just one week, but we certainly missed out a lot as well. So, the next trip to Wales is already in the early planning stages. :D
I hope you'll enjoy those entries. :)

Merlin screening at Caerphilly Castle | 11 December | cadw.wales.gov.uk

OK, this isn't a cast-related event, but it is a locations-related event, and how cool is that...?

Cadw and BBC Cymru Wales will be screening episode 412 a week ahead of the tv schedule, on Sunday 11 December, as part of their Medieval Fayre. The screening will take place in the castle's Great Hall, which stood in for Hengist's hall in ep 204. There will also be a display of costumes, and so on. Follow the link above for more info about getting tickets.

Wandering in Wales – a tour of Merlin and Arthurian sites in Wales – April 11-17, 2011

Since I went on a tour of Merlin filming sites over the course of 6 days, I thought it would be a good idea to tell you about options just in case you also want to visit. I'll try and include costs and mileage, etc. Keep in mind that I'm from the States so I'm always astonished at how close everything is!

Episode 308 The Eye of the Phoenix made terrific use of Caerphilly Castle in South Wales. It served as two locations, providing the exterior shots in the sequence where Merlin finds Gwaine, and then both exteriors and interiors for the Fisher King's castle. During my recent Locations Trip I tried to document each scene.

Please note this is an image-heavy post

Hello! I am back home again now. :-D I had a fun trip, and of course didn't manage to do half as much as I wanted. However! Seeing as we had fun yesterday with looking at the Neath Abbey location for some lovely promotional shots, I thought I'd do the same today with Caerphilly Castle. And then later on, I promise: serious posts about proper filming locations. No, really.

So the lovely promotional shots we're looking at today are of Arthur and Merlin on what appears to be a ruined wall. What it really is, is the remains of a tower from the north-east corner of the Inner Ward at Caerphilly Castle... Click to see it all in devastating detail!!! )

Thank heavens for Christmas! I have spent a couple of days updating this community, and the companion website and Flickr group. It's been fun, and well overdue!

Click here for a pimping banner, what I learned from the audio commentaries, and another possible location found... )

and just because it's that special day...

This post's icon is chosen for our darling birthday boy Colin Morgan - who is So Very Beautiful and So Very Important that we always acknowledge his birthday with fireworks - the very moment it begins - and a national public holiday. I hope he has fireworks (of the best and most colourful kind) to celebrate throughout all twenty-four hours. Bless the man, I love him to bits! ♥

I recently visited Wales for 2 days and saw 6 filming sites. I wouldn't recommend more than that, although some of them are very close to each other. As someone from the US, driving on the left side was 'fun' but I got used to it. The narrow roads - not so much. But it was well worth the trip.

My posts are image heavy so here are the links. If you don't want links, I'll try and import what I wrote. Just let me know.

Day 1 - Dunraven Bay, Cosmeston Medieval Village and Caerphilly Castle
Day 2 - Speech House Lake, Puzzlewood and Raglan Castle

Thanks so much to everyone who suggested things to see. It helped immensely!

Caerphilly Castle is the largest castle in Wales, and while much of it is ruined, it is a fascinating place to visit with some striking features.

how it's used in Merlin

The episode Lancelot and Guinevere used the Castle as the decaying stronghold of Hengist, a 'ruthless bandit leader'. He has kidnapped Gwen, thinking she's Morgana, and is holding her for ransom. We find Lancelot there with his dreams of chivalry in tatters, fighting the resident strongman for the entertainment of the bandits.
