Hagia Sophia, a former basilica and mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, must be our most exotic Merlin Location ever!

how it's used in Merlin

The episode 504 Another's Sorrow opens in the kingdom of Nemeth, home of Camelot's allies King Rodor and his daughter Princess Mithian. The evil King Odin and Morgana have taken control of the kingdom; they confront their royal prisoners in the opulent throne room.

The throne room scene was filmed in the large green-screen room at the studios. The floor, the throne and some mocked-up pillars are part of the set. The ornate marble and tiled walls and arches are, however, CGI'd in using images from Hagia Sophia and similar places.

Here I am at long last, following up on my rewatch of episode 101…

The Valiant episode is very Camelot-centric, but hopefully you'll still find it interesting!

You can view the post here on the Merlin Locations website. But please be warned it's very image-heavy!

This community, the website, and indeed the whole Merlin Locations thing, grew quite randomly. For me it all started with a visit to Puzzlewood and Speech House Lake on 25 April 2009; I fell in love with both in different ways. I thought that only a few people might share my interest in these places - not only for their own sake, I mean, but as filming locations for our beloved Merlin. I was astonished and happy to be wrong about that!

From there I investigated the obvious locations such as the Chateau de Pierrefonds, and also other more obscure locations when prompted by clues in DVD extras such as the video diaries or by information provided by fellow Locations Geeks. It was all pretty random. But I always thought we should at some stage start at the beginning, and go through the episodes in a more systematic way. Also, it seemed that people enjoyed my weekly updates on each episode's locations during the third and fourth seasons. Hence the first of these 'rewatch' posts on the website.

Well, like most others, I can't believe it's over for another year!

Apologies for the delayed post, but I was away with some excellent friends for the weekend...

Anyway! Here we go... )

Woot! I am just loving the show's use of locations in ep 306 The Changeling. Somehow it makes the Merlinverse seem all the more real and solid when they revisit places we already know and love.

As I'm sure you all immediately recognised, we returned yet again to the magic of Puzzlewood for this week's ep 305 The Crystal Cave, for the opening scenes with Merlin and Arthur being chased through the woods, and then Merlin meeting Taliesin.

The crystal cave itself seemed to be the sets used for the dragon's cave redressed.

And I was pleased to see them making terrific use again of the beautiful stained glass windows above the chapel in Pierrefonds. We haven't seen them since the very first episode!

Really beautifully and dramatically photographed this episode, I thought... and I suspect I can't for once sing Dale's praises, as he took a break for the second block of filming! But alas Mr L has reclaimed the tv so I won't be able to double-check the credits... In the meantime I just had to say it though: stunning photography! ♥

ETA: And I am reliably informed that it was Dale, so this little DMC!fangirl is still dancing around like an idiot, but has now also quit feeling guilty about it. :-D Not that he'd expect me to feel guilty about it - he's always singing the praises of the other DoPs who've worked on Merlin. One of nature's gentlemen, our Dale... ♥

As anticipated, there wasn't much to note in terms of locations in ep 303 Goblin's Gold, as the episode centred in the castle, and used the Chateau and the sets in Cardiff. However, Geoffrey's library was seriously extended, so I'm sure he was happy about that!

Similarly, ep 304 Gwaine was also centred in the castle, and again made use of the Chateau and the sets in Cardiff.

There are two things worth noting, however!

Gosh! Well, that double episode certainly got the third season off to an epic start! And from a locations perspective, there was much of interest.

Filming for the third season of Merlin began in early March. Hurrah! They are currently based in Cardiff, and will be filming in France again in April. Little bits of info are coming in about filming locations, which I have summarised below. Thanks are as ever due to our research geek [livejournal.com profile] gealach_ros; the links below all point to her journal entries.

  • I'm delighted that Merlin has returned to Puzzlewood for three days of filming! I really love that place, and it makes for a very atmospheric location. Read the article here.

  • The above article also mentions nearby Clements End - which is great, cos it gives me another location to visit! Judging from Google Maps, it may provide another forest location.

  • There is a new film studio near Cardiff called Dragon Studios, which includes a castle set. Our favourite DOP Dale McCready has visited there on a locations scout, so there's a good chance they'll use it during the third season. Read the post and see images here.

That's all for now! If anyone hears anything further, you're very welcome to post about it here. ♥

As we all know by now, our heroic cast and crew film the Merlin episodes in blocks of three (give or take) along with any pick–ups that are needed for earlier episodes. All of which is complicated by the fact that filming is moved from Wales to France and back again three times each season.

This presents challenges to everyone involved. One full scene might be filmed in segments spread over a number of weeks and in different counties. Actors need to recreate and maintain the same emotions and pace; the director and DoP need to do the same for the lighting, camera angles and overall feel of the shots; costumes and props need to be coordinated; the editor needs to string all this together into a coherent story. Some continuity errors do creep in, it’s true, but the wonder to me is that there aren’t a whole lot more!

Thank heavens for Christmas! I have spent a couple of days updating this community, and the companion website and Flickr group. It's been fun, and well overdue!

Click here for a pimping banner, what I learned from the audio commentaries, and another possible location found... )

and just because it's that special day...

This post's icon is chosen for our darling birthday boy Colin Morgan - who is So Very Beautiful and So Very Important that we always acknowledge his birthday with fireworks - the very moment it begins - and a national public holiday. I hope he has fireworks (of the best and most colourful kind) to celebrate throughout all twenty-four hours. Bless the man, I love him to bits! ♥

Gosh, what an ep! But taking a deep breath and looking beyond the drama to the locations for a moment... I've got a definite, a probable, and two maybes.

Raglan Castle

We saw a return to Raglan Castle, as foretold by [livejournal.com profile] archaeologist_d . (You go, girl!) When Merlin, Arthur and the Expendable Knights enter the abandoned castle to check out the reports of smoke, that courtyard is the other big open area at Raglan Castle, known as the Pitched Stone Court. (As we all know by now, Merlin's confrontation with Nimueh on The Isle of the Blessed was filmed in Fountain Court just nearby.) You see our heroes coming in through the main gateway, and advancing across the yard.

Caerphilly Castle is the largest castle in Wales, and while much of it is ruined, it is a fascinating place to visit with some striking features.

how it's used in Merlin

The episode Lancelot and Guinevere used the Castle as the decaying stronghold of Hengist, a 'ruthless bandit leader'. He has kidnapped Gwen, thinking she's Morgana, and is holding her for ransom. We find Lancelot there with his dreams of chivalry in tatters, fighting the resident strongman for the entertainment of the bandits.

I'm making a bit of an assumption here… I know they filmed part of season two in Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean - and the first ep of the season, The Curse of Cornelius Sigan, uses caves that look somewhat like the photos I've seen of Clearwell Caves - so I'm going to risk putting two and two together and perhaps only making three. I'm going to assume this is the right location, until I can get there in person and investigate futher.

ETA: I can now confirm that Clearwell Caves were indeed used in episodes 201 and 204.

Like any tv show, Merlin uses a few main filming locations that appear in each episode, and then various alternate locations for single episodes. One unusual feature of Merlin, however, is that the episodes are filmed in blocks of three or four; an alternate location might therefore be used for two or more episodes in one block.
