Maes y Camlan

(Apologies for the spam, but I will be starting a new work project on Wednesday, and if I don't get this written up now, the relevant brain cells may all dwindle away…)

Alas, I didn't get to visit the field of Camlan, but I did locate The Locked Gate. I also had afternoon tea at Meirion Mill, and discovered that the ginger and lemon slice is totally to-die-for. Then I visited the Church of St Tydecho at Mallwyd.

Maes y Camlan

This field has been identified as the possible location of Camlan, where Arthur and Mordred fell in their last battle. The only directions I had were that it was near a craft shop and cafe called Meirion Mill!

Meirion Mill isn't actually in Dinas Mawddwy, but in a small village just south of it called Minllyn. The gate giving access to Maes y Camlan is at the far end of the Mill's car park, to the left. There is a sign on the gate explaining that it's kept locked now because the path has become dangerous, and people shouldn't visit without an escort. It gives Laurence Main's contact details. I didn't get a photo, but it's all pretty clear once you actually get to Minllyn.

Church of St Tydecho

The mortally wounded Arthur was taken from Maes y Camlan to this church, just a little further south down the valley in Mallwyd. It's worth noting that the current building only dates back to the 14th century, but tradition has it that there has been a church in this location since the 6th century.

Apparently the boys were going to visit it as well, but as we all know they ran out of time that day.

There is a small layby just off the main road, but if that's full you'll need to park at the nearby pub. (What would we ever do without pubs and their car parks…?)

links and details

Both Minllyn and Mallwyd are on the A470 in Powys, Wales.

rating

I think I'll hold off on awarding a rating until I've visited the main attraction.
