Welcome!

The aim of this community is to share information about and images of the locations used by the BBC television show Merlin, to help you visit them either virtually or actually! You are very welcome to join the community, and post with your own knowledge or experience of the locations.

Caveat Emptor

I know you're all sensible people! And I'm sure you realise that all information presented on this site is as correct as we can get it at the time - however, things change. Also, some 'commercial' locations close over winter (Puzzlewood, National Trust properties) while others operate on reduced hours (English Heritage properties). Other locations can actually be dangerous (e.g. Dunraven Bay, Porth yr Ogof). So, it is always worth checking the official site for the location (or indeed the tides in Porthcawl) before making firm travel plans.

If you find any info on this community that is wrong or misleading, please let us know. Or if you have anything useful to add, please make a post about it.

Thank you very kindly for your understanding!

The Rules

This is an anarcho syndicalist collective, and Julie is the executive officer of the week. Julie sez:

  • Please play nice, and let's all share our toys!

  • Please don't post things that don't belong to you (that includes images) unless you have permission to do so from the owner. If it exists on a properly credited site elsewhere on the net, we can link to it. A thumbnail image, or a brief quote or summary of the text, is probably perfectly all right, along with a link to the source.

  • On reflection, however, I think we'll infringe the BBC's rights to a small extent, if we want to post a screen capture or two to illustrate the use of a location in the show. Please give credit to whoever created the screencap.

  • Please always give credit where credit is due.

  • Please post no more than one image or three icons 'above the cut'. More images, or otherwise long posts, should go behind an lj-cut.

  • Please tag appropriately.

  • Given that this community exists to help fans visit filming locations in the real world as well as virtually, some 'commercial' content is permissible within reason. It must be posted with the genuine intent of assisting our fellow fans in making their own travel plans. It might include, for example, hotel recommendations or a heads-up about a relevant discount or opportunity. It must be brief and subtle; if a longer post is required, post it on your own journal, and link to it from a brief post to the community. Such posts must never overwhelm other fannish posts in style, content or number. They must be tagged resources: other.
The intersection of fandom and the commercial world can create difficulties, so the mods reserve the right to apply, amend or withdraw this policy without notice at any time. Thank you for your understanding!

  • Please ask me if there's anything I've forgotten or left unclarified!

Tags

I have probably set up too many tags, but let's run with it, and I'll rethink / redo later as necessary. Each post, as appropriate, should be tagged thus:

  • Each location you post about in any detail should be tagged with: (a) the country; AND (b) the specific or general location. For example: country: france, loc: chateau de pierrefonds, or country: wales, loc: studio sets.

  • Each location you post about should be also tagged with where it appears in Merlin. This might be (a) the specific episode; OR (b) the specific season; OR (c) all seasons. For example: a post about the Chateau de Pierrefonds would be tagged seasons (all); the studio sets in Surrey used for the first two blocks of filming would be tagged season 1; and Raglan Castle would be tagged ep 113 morte d'arthur, ep 212 fires of idirsholas.

  • Last but not least, you can give each location you post about a Pointy Hat Rating from 1 to 5! I am going to use this to rate how wonderful I think the locations are, and how worthy they are of a visit - 1 pointy hat meaning 'only worth it cos the pretties have been there' and 5 pointy hats meaning 'I loved it so much I forgot about the pretties'. You can use them to indicate other things, if you like, but please explain your intentions in your post. For example: my own post about Puzzlewood would be tagged with pointy hats: 5.

  • Again, please ask me if there's anything I've forgotten or made unnecessarily confusing! You can use the !mod: need a new tag and !mod: query tags to get my attention.

With thanks...

Our Road Trip mood theme was created by mrs_leary using screen captures by yorkshirewench (and a few from gealach_ros) of the BBC Wales show The Real Merlin and Arthur.

The Merlin Locations icons on our Userpics page are available for snagging, but please credit the creator!
