Mr Leary and I had fun on another Merlin Locations Tour (TM) yesterday, and braved the depths of Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean.

I can now definitely confirm that this was used as a filming location in episodes 201 The Curse of Cornelius Sigan and 204 Lancelot and Guinevere. In ep 201, Clearwell Caves stood in for the caves below Camelot where Sigan's tomb is found, and in ep 204 for the Tunnels of Andor, home to GIANT... baby rats.

Caerphilly Castle is the largest castle in Wales, and while much of it is ruined, it is a fascinating place to visit with some striking features.

how it's used in Merlin

The episode Lancelot and Guinevere used the Castle as the decaying stronghold of Hengist, a 'ruthless bandit leader'. He has kidnapped Gwen, thinking she's Morgana, and is holding her for ransom. We find Lancelot there with his dreams of chivalry in tatters, fighting the resident strongman for the entertainment of the bandits.

You heard it here first... or maybe second! A season two episode, not yet shown, used the wonderful Goodrich Castle in Herefordshire as a filming location. Apparently they used the basement of the Solar Block, which you can see in the following photos.

It is a terrific castle to visit, with all kinds of goodies to explore, including an enclosed dungeon, and located on a beautiful site. I am very much looking forward to seeing the results on screen!

OK, this is totally a long shot, but I would love to find that beautiful stream used in ep 204 - the place where the boys washed the berries from their faces and had a Deep and Meaningful Talk about love... (Was it also used for the place where Morgana stripped to her shift...? I don't know. I may have been as distracted as Kendrick at that point. This seems like a good excuse to watch the episode again.)

I assume the stream is in the Forest of Dean or the Wye River Valley. I would guess it's fairly convenient to a road of some sort, so they didn't have to carry the equipment and make the stars walk too far, and so on.

I am sure we won't be able to track it down. But I thought I would do a post about it just in case anyone has any ideas.

And now I will stop spamming your flist! At least until tomorrow... :-)
