I have finally done another rewatch! This time it's episode 104 The Poisoned Chalice, with our first look at the beautiful Burnham Beeches, and the first cinematography by Dale McCready. I hope you'll come have a look at the (image-intense) post over on the website!

The opening scene of the first episode of Merlin was filmed at Ivinghoe Beacon.  It's at the eastern edge of the Ridgeway Path and there were lots of hikers out enjoying the day. At first, walking down from the car park, it's hard to see where they filmed that scene but as you go over the first ridge and turn around, you see instantly where Merlin first appears. I admit it gave me a bit of a shiver to see it.

Plus it's a lovely area just to walk around and fairly easy, too.

Definitely at least 3 pointy hats and maybe more.

All of my pictures for this site are in the merlin locations flickr account.

This community, the website, and indeed the whole Merlin Locations thing, grew quite randomly. For me it all started with a visit to Puzzlewood and Speech House Lake on 25 April 2009; I fell in love with both in different ways. I thought that only a few people might share my interest in these places - not only for their own sake, I mean, but as filming locations for our beloved Merlin. I was astonished and happy to be wrong about that!

From there I investigated the obvious locations such as the Chateau de Pierrefonds, and also other more obscure locations when prompted by clues in DVD extras such as the video diaries or by information provided by fellow Locations Geeks. It was all pretty random. But I always thought we should at some stage start at the beginning, and go through the episodes in a more systematic way. Also, it seemed that people enjoyed my weekly updates on each episode's locations during the third and fourth seasons. Hence the first of these 'rewatch' posts on the website.

You can view the post here. But please be warned it's very very image-heavy!

So… after the thrills (hot!Colin) and disappointments (absent!Bradley) of the London Expo, my dear friend [livejournal.com profile] asifidletyou and I took a quick Locations Tour to our two new Buckinghamshire locations: Burnham Beeches and Ivinghoe Beacon.

Burnham Beeches

Of course [livejournal.com profile] asifidletyou is nothing if not tenacious when it comes to Arthur and Bradley, so we managed to find the rise over which Arthur appears in episode 104 The Poisoned Chalice

{happy sighs} This is a good one! A Merlin Location three times over, and each significant in its own way. It gave me a real thrill to visit Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire on Monday, and find the spot on the ancient Ridgeway Path where we saw Merlin Himself for the very first time. I don't know if it was deliberate, but one could hardly wish for a more historical or indeed a more English path for him to walk!

So, during the off-season I'm thinking about the things we haven't covered yet in Merlin Locations, the mysteries we haven't solved... and it suddenly occurred to me to ask why our beloved cast and crew were in Buckinghamshire during season one.

I'm sure we all recall the scene where Colin's cheekbones were kicking right off... It's the opening scene of Colin's video diary in the DVD extras for season one, part two. This seems to have been filmed on Ivinghoe Beacon. Bradley's first guess was right - they were looking at a lion carved into the chalk. Unlike the traditional, historical horses and fully-endowed masculine figures on hillsides, this was actually created in modern times by Whipsnade Zoo.
