It's now September, and our latest icon fest is officially closed... but please don't let that stop you! We will always be glad to see icons posted here that celebrate not only our beautiful filming locations, but also our heroes behind the camera. Indeed, if you want to contribute a late entry, there's probably time to do so!

Thank you so much to those who took part by contributing icons to the fest: [livejournal.com profile] 1nagromniloc , [livejournal.com profile] archaeologist_d , [livejournal.com profile] chayiana , [livejournal.com profile] gealach_ros , [livejournal.com profile] yavannauk  and, well, me! :-D You all created really beautiful and interesting icons, and I was delighted to see them.

the future and its scenes )

ETA: I have now uploaded the icons - or most of them! I started by sorting the icons into those I would post to the website and those I wouldn't, in line with the approach detailed above. It's a privacy issue, yes? I'm sure you'll understand. Anyway, by the time I'd uploaded the first batch to our Userpics page, I'd used up most of the second of two extra icons packages I've bought - and I still had well over 30 icons waiting in the second batch. It wasn't so much the expense that stopped me, as the thought that we will no doubt have other icon fests in the future, and there seems little point in uploading icons now if we're only going to have to {sniff} delete them later to make room for more. So I left it as is. If anyone has any serious objections to this, then please let me know via comment or PM!

I have since uploaded the first batch of icons to a new entry on the website. You can find it here. For those of you with icons, you might like to double-check that I've credited everything correctly. If anyone wants anything changed here, please let me know.

Thank you!

I was absolutely delighted at how our Merlin Locations icon fest worked out. Here's some stats, because I'm dorky that way:
  • We had a total of 201 icons posted. Hurrah!
  • Pierrefonds featured in 89 of those 201 icons.
  • Including Pierrefonds, the icons covered 18 different locations.
  • The icons were created by me and five lovely iconographers: [livejournal.com profile] archaeologist_d, [livejournal.com profile] gealach_ros, [livejournal.com profile] luisadeza, [livejournal.com profile] nenimefish, and [livejournal.com profile] yavannauk. Thank you, my darlings!
  • We all used our own photos, which I think is awesome, along with some beautiful photos taken by our sweet [livejournal.com profile] gwy.

I have now uploaded 104 of the icons to our userpic page. You can see them here!

I made sure that all the locations and all the iconographers were represented. Otherwise, I tried to choose a range of styles and subjects, and also considered which ones were mentioned most in comments. Oh, and obviously I had to include the one with Colin in it. (If any of the iconographers would have preferred me to make a different decision about their own icons, please get in touch! My judgement is hardly infallible, alas...)

I am now pondering whether / how to include the icons (all 201 of them!) on the website and/or Flickr group. If anyone has any thoughts on that, I'd appreciate hearing them. In any case, I wouldn't upload anything without the iconographer's permission.

Thank you all for participating, whether with icons, admiration or comments. While the icon fest is over for now, I hope you will all feel free to post or link to your locations icons here!

P.S. And now we only have to wait another 191 days until the third season begins...

ETA: Have just finished uploading all the icons to the website. You can find them here! Thank you all again! I've really enjoyed this.

The question has been raised of whether we will allow 'commercial' content in posts to the community. And after some pondering we thought it appropriate within certain reasonable limits.

If we're about helping fans actually visit these wonderful places, then inevitably questions of travel, accommodation and money arise. Posts by fans whose genuine intent it is to assist other fans in making travel plans seem fair to me. Just like a post in a general Merlin fannish community might point you towards Jethro standees or Kangaroo Poo t-shirts. A heads-up about a discount or an opportunity that we might otherwise miss also seems fair.

Anything beyond that would be questionable. This isn't a place for commercial advertising. Obviously.

So the following has just been added to the Rules on our profile page. All (polite!) discussion is welcome. I'd rather deal with any identifiable problems now rather than later. On the other hand, if you're willing to run with it and see whether it ever does actually become a problem, I'd be very happy with that, too.

Given that this community exists to help fans visit filming locations in the real world as well as virtually, some 'commercial' content is permissible within reason. It must be posted with the genuine intent of assisting our fellow fans in making their own travel plans. It might include, for example, hotel recommendations or a heads-up about a relevant discount or opportunity. It must be brief and subtle; if a longer post is required, post it on your own journal, and link to it from a brief post to the community. Such posts must never overwhelm other fannish posts in style, content or number. The intersection of fandom and the commercial world can create difficulties, so the mods reserve the right to apply, amend or withdraw this policy without notice at any time. Thank you for your understanding!

This post was brought to you by our sponsors Corona.

I'm proud to launch the Merlin Locations community's first (and possibly only) icons fest! Throughout February 2010 we want your location-related icons. Your creativity, your craft, your 100-squared pixels of art.

ponders...

This notion occurred to me while I was pondering the fact that this (paid) community comes with a number of spaces for userpics - and beyond loading up a default userpic, with perhaps a couple of alternatives, I've never been entirely sure what the point of that might be. I mean, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't use the community userpics when posting, can you? Or indeed when doing anything else. And otherwise they just sit there. Looking (we hope!) pretty.

concludes...

So what I thought we could do is load up the space with location-related icons. They can sit there and look pretty, and be admired by all. They can be available for snagging by those who would like to use them (with credit, of course). And in the meantime we get to have a bit of creative fun while awaiting the third season of Merlin. (As of today, we only have 229 days to go!)

So... this is what happens when I really should be concentrating on Real Life. I start creating mood themes quite gratuitously... It's called avoidance through immersing oneself in the pretties.

Actually, what I really wanted to do was create a mood theme using only my photos of the actual locations, plus the ones I've taken of the cast. And that's still my plan, ultimately, though it's a bit of a challenge. Because how do you represent 'anger' or 'groggy' using only that kind of source material? Though some are easy enough - 'weird' is a gargoyle at Pierrefonds, 'indescribable' is the castle rising from the fields, 'hungry' is the menu item 'Filet de Colin'. And so on. Anyway, I'll keep pondering all of that...

In the meantime, as a practice, I created a Road Trip mood theme using screen captures by [info]yorkshirewench (and a few from [info]gealach_ros) of the BBC Wales show The Real Merlin and Arthur. Thank you both!

Except I cheated a bit. It was easy enough finding 'happy' and even 'sad' - but 'angry'...? Just didn't happen. Though Colin did get mildly irritated in his Colin Morgan way with the map. And then I thought, well, is this the kind of community where people often get angry...? Perhaps not! (Or maybe I am just an incurable Pollyanna. Well, OK, yes. I am.) But I just used colours for the mood families of 'angry' and 'okay'. I'm not saying you can't feel them - in fact, going back through some of my entries, I see I have a nice red 'frustrated' in there - it's just that the boys didn't act those ones out for me on their road trip. Bless their good hearts.

Anyway, if you're interested, you can see all the moods here.

And today I feel 'accomplished'... Show us how it's done, Professor James!

Thank heavens for Christmas! I have spent a couple of days updating this community, and the companion website and Flickr group. It's been fun, and well overdue!

Click here for a pimping banner, what I learned from the audio commentaries, and another possible location found... )

and just because it's that special day...

This post's icon is chosen for our darling birthday boy Colin Morgan - who is So Very Beautiful and So Very Important that we always acknowledge his birthday with fireworks - the very moment it begins - and a national public holiday. I hope he has fireworks (of the best and most colourful kind) to celebrate throughout all twenty-four hours. Bless the man, I love him to bits! ♥

I have now created a group on Flickr for Merlin Locations. The idea is that you may like to use it as a place to upload and share your own photos of various locations. (Of course you don't have to use it, but it's there as a resource if you'd like to.)

I am delighted to say that, with the help of a friend, I have now launched a totally revamped Merlin Locations website. You can find it at the same address as the previous version:

www.merlinlocations.com

I hope you like it!

The idea is that it acts as a companion to this community, but also stands alone as a source of information for people who aren't on lj. Therefore I have 'consolidated' the variety of information we have all made available via this community. It's based on a blogging application (WordPress) but it functions more like a website, if you see what I mean.

However, while the site is there for our use, I have also broken the links from the website back to the lj community. Because I, for one, am into things (oh, such as slash) that I'd rather just keep on lj. This is in the interests of promoting the website's use out in the broader fannish and 'mundane' world, while also protecting the privacy of lj members who'd rather keep some sense of separation. If that doesn't make sense or doesn't work for whatever reason, please feel free to clue me in! :-)

A few other points, while I'm rambling on... )

[identity profile] mrs-leary.livejournal.com

Thanks are due to [livejournal.com profile] denkiva, who has kindly featured both the [community profile] merlinlocations community and our companion website in the blog known as The Camelot Chronicle. Check out the blog, and also the associated Merlin TV Series Fan Site - there's lots of info and goodies here. (Though I must say I found the slideshow of Colin!images a complete distraction... Still, if I'm going to waste time, it may as well be pleasant!)

[identity profile] mrs-leary.livejournal.com

I am delighted to see that we have just passed the century mark for members / watchers of [livejournal.com profile] merlinlocations. Not bad at all for a community with a fairly specific focus! Thank you all very much for being part of it. I'm having a lot of fun with this, and it's nice to feel I'm not alone out here.

So, what next...? )

[identity profile] mrs-leary.livejournal.com
I am delighted to launch a new website, created with the help of friends, which acts as a companion to this Merlin Locations lj community.

You can find it at: merlinlocations.com

For now, it is a fairly basic site, designed to show off foist my photography upon you. (Except I just realised I didn't include anything from Raglan Castle yet. Obviously it's already in need of updating!) I've also included my cast photos, seeing as they've been so happily received. (Thank you!) If I may presume... if anyone would like hi-res copies of anything to help with icons or other graphics, please feel free to ask.

I hope you enjoy the site!

Edit: I have now added Raglan Castle to the site, so it is at least momentarily up to date!

Welcome!

Welcome to my very first community! The aim here is to share information about and images of the locations used by the BBC television show Merlin.

I started visiting these sites simply because I'm a fan of the show - but the locations are so beautiful and intriguing, I've become a fan of them for their own sake! Places such as Chateau de Pierrefonds, Puzzlewood and Dunraven Bay are well worth a visit in their own right, pretty boys and unicorns or not. This community can help you visit them virtually, and also provide information if you plan to visit them actually!

You are very welcome to join the community, and post with your own knowledge or experience of the locations. Please see the User Info page for the rules (such as they are!) and info re the tags, and so on. Comments suggesting links to other information on the net are also welcome.

I plan to set up a seperate website that echoes the information in this community, but also provides extras such as slideshows of photos, and so on. I'll post again about that once it's further along.

Meanwhile, on with our virtual tour... I hope you have fun!
