During our recent post-513 pilgrimage, my stalwart husband and I returned yet again to Cannop Ponds, armed with screen captures from episode 504 Another's Sorrow. I'm sure you all remember how Mithian warned Merlin about Hilda really being Morgana, by sending him down to the stream to fill her waterskin, where he found Morgana's name scratched on a rock. While the main scene was filmed at Candleston Castle near Merthyr Mawr in South Wales, the stream scene was filmed at Cannop Ponds in the Forest of Dean, England.

You may remember from my previous Cannop Ponds 'revisit' that there has been some serious earthworks happening here, which has had quite an effect on the areas of this location that have been used in earlier episodes.

As we all know by now, the only constant is change! No, wait. The only two constants are change and our love for Merlin!

Our redoubtable Locations Detective Muriel recently revisited Cannop Ponds in the Forest of Dean, and was rather dismayed to find some serious earthworks had been undertaken - no doubt necessary for the management of the ponds and the brook, but significantly changing the contours of a few filming locations of which we are very fond. Well, there'll be no revisiting those same spots for Arthur, Merlin and their mates - but maybe once the changes have 'bedded in', we'll see the revamped location used for new settings in the Merlinverse.

I decided to go investigate during my recent Locations Trip.

This is the last post resulting from my recent Locations Trip, I promise! (Apologies for the spam.)

We have the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] pakafe to thank for identifying the two locations used at Cannop Ponds. In episode 307 The Castle of Fyrien, our four young characters camp overnight on their way to said castle, and in episode 310 The Queen of Hearts, Arthur and Gwen picnic together. These scenes were filmed in the wooded area where Cannop Brook (or Burn, depending on which map you look at) flows from one pond down to the next. I went to have a look myself last weekend… and came away with something a little more wonderful than photos!

This is an image-heavy post!

Yesterday when we ought to have been packing for our holiday  we decided instead to go on a location hunt in South Wales - well The Forest of Dean actually.

The search was for the second stream they used in S3 E10

Gosh! Another beautiful locations episode... And people are curious... My visitor numbers at the website just shot up even further than usual on a Saturday - almost double!

I am left with more questions than answers, though. Can anyone help pin these down...?

ETA3: I'll try and do a proper post about this soon, but I have had a suggestion from Richard via the website that the establishing shot of the Castle of Fyrien could used an image of Lindisfarne (the Holy Island) in Northumberland. It would have been taken from what Richard describes as the northern part of the beach - and so far I can only find photos from the other side of it, but the general shape seems right. Still not sure whether the hill inland would be part of the original place, or whether it's been added in.
