During our recent post-513 pilgrimage, my stalwart husband and I returned yet again to Cannop Ponds, armed with screen captures from episode 504 Another's Sorrow. I'm sure you all remember how Mithian warned Merlin about Hilda really being Morgana, by sending him down to the stream to fill her waterskin, where he found Morgana's name scratched on a rock. While the main scene was filmed at Candleston Castle near Merthyr Mawr in South Wales, the stream scene was filmed at Cannop Ponds in the Forest of Dean, England.

You may remember from my previous Cannop Ponds 'revisit' that there has been some serious earthworks happening here, which has had quite an effect on the areas of this location that have been used in earlier episodes.

There is a place named King Arthur's Cave near Symonds Yat in the Wye Valley. And with a name like that, of course I was going to visit! I did so way back in October 2009. You can guess how thrilled I was when they finally actually used the cave as a Merlin Location!

how it's used in Merlin

In episode 504 Another's Sorrow, Princess Mithian has come to Camelot to ask for Arthur's help in rescuing her father, Rodor. She says he is hiding at a tomb or mausoleum just over the border, but actually Rodor is being held there by the evil Odin, and it's all a dastardly trap. Despite realising the risks, the chivalrous Arthur accompanies Mithian there.

We first see the location as Arthur and Mithian approach it. The show used the cave entrances and the surrounding area, and CGI'd a structure on the hillside directly above the cave.

The lookout at Symonds Yat Rock is well worth visiting for its own sake - for the sake of the views and the peregrine falcons - and it's also a Merlin Location!

how it's used in Merlin

Morgana has a new place in which to hang out from episode 510 The Kindness of Strangers onwards. We first see this ruined castle when Morgana deals with the captured Alator. The interior seems to be the Council Chambers set seriously redressed with ivy, debris and a different throne. I'm interested here, though, in the exterior establishing shot.

This is just a small update re Speech House Lake, as we used a different part of the shoreline for parts of ep 513 The Diamond in the Day.

I hardly have the heart to do this in much detail - and maybe some fans won't be ready for such analysis - but this is an overview of how our beloved Merlin peeps built Avalon for the final episode. A few different locations were used, and different places within those locations, so it's certainly generated some confusion and discussion. This is how I think it worked, and of course any further ideas will be very welcome.

The very last scene in the very last episode of Merlin {sniff} was filmed in the road that runs past Huntsham Court Farm in the Wye Valley. It is a great choice for such an iconic scene.

The opening scene of the first episode of Merlin was filmed at Ivinghoe Beacon.  It's at the eastern edge of the Ridgeway Path and there were lots of hikers out enjoying the day. At first, walking down from the car park, it's hard to see where they filmed that scene but as you go over the first ridge and turn around, you see instantly where Merlin first appears. I admit it gave me a bit of a shiver to see it.

Plus it's a lovely area just to walk around and fairly easy, too.

Definitely at least 3 pointy hats and maybe more.

All of my pictures for this site are in the merlin locations flickr account.

[livejournal.com profile] merlocmod  and I visited Penshurst Place in July to see where they'd filmed the first episode of Merlin. It's a lovely manor house with extensive gardens. The Baron's Hall was instantly recognizable but alas we weren't allowed to take pictures (although I snuck a few in - although you can buy postcards of the hall and the stairway where Merlin stood). The self-guided tour of the house was lovely, too, but the area where they'd filmed the scene with Merlin being thrown into the dungeons was not open to the public.

It was well worth a trip, though, if nothing else than the gardens are gorgeous. All of my pictures are on the merlinlocation flickr account.

I'd give it 2 pointy hats (maybe more if you like gardens).

[livejournal.com profile] merlocmod  and I got to visit Chislehurst Caves on a wet day in July but of course underground, it didn't matter. They have tours every hour but it's by lantern light so it made for an interesting journey. Now, I'm not fond of the dark or underground things so it was a bit scary for me but don't let that stop you. It was quite a bit of fun, too.

The caves are delineated as Roman, Saxon or Druids but that's not really accurate.  What is apparent is that the caves are extensive and have been worked for a very long time. They were used in WWII as underground shelters with each person assigned to an area. They even had mail delivery!

The guide was entertaining but when asked about Merlin, he didn't know much. He did take us to the area near where they'd filmed but alas we didn't see the little pool where they filmed the Avank or the red-eyed duck (from the video diaries).

Beware, though. He did take all the lanterns away at one point and turn off the lights just to show that caves without torches/flames/light of some kind would be completely black (unlike the movies and our own Merlin show).  After a while, I cheated and turned on my camera (and was caught out about it).

I'd give it 2 pointy hats just because it was an historical site but I'd combine it with other things rather than a single trip on its own.

As we know, Merlin has often filmed in the caves at Clearwell Caves (in the Forest of Dean) over the past few seasons, starting with the miners working under Camelot in episode 201 The Curse of Cornelius Sigan. But that's all been underground… We've since found that they've also used some of the surrounding area as a filming location. So this post is an exploration of Clearwell Caves overground.

This all started with the charcoal burner's hut that Merlin and Lancelot visit during episode 402 The Darkest Hour, and Merlin uses as Emrys's home in episode 403 The Wicked Day. I couldn't pin down any clues as to location from watching the episode, so I cheated and tweeted to ask the awesome director Alice Troughton if she could point us in the right direction. She kindly replied as you see below, that it was just above Clearwell Caves.

Here I am at long last, following up on my rewatch of episode 101…

The Valiant episode is very Camelot-centric, but hopefully you'll still find it interesting!

You can view the post here on the Merlin Locations website. But please be warned it's very image-heavy!

This community, the website, and indeed the whole Merlin Locations thing, grew quite randomly. For me it all started with a visit to Puzzlewood and Speech House Lake on 25 April 2009; I fell in love with both in different ways. I thought that only a few people might share my interest in these places - not only for their own sake, I mean, but as filming locations for our beloved Merlin. I was astonished and happy to be wrong about that!

From there I investigated the obvious locations such as the Chateau de Pierrefonds, and also other more obscure locations when prompted by clues in DVD extras such as the video diaries or by information provided by fellow Locations Geeks. It was all pretty random. But I always thought we should at some stage start at the beginning, and go through the episodes in a more systematic way. Also, it seemed that people enjoyed my weekly updates on each episode's locations during the third and fourth seasons. Hence the first of these 'rewatch' posts on the website.

You can view the post here. But please be warned it's very very image-heavy!

According to this person's photo album, Merlin crew members were scouting for a shoot for 'Merlin' on August, 10, 2011.

More information about the cave can be found here.

We went for a relaxing walk in Puzzlewood a few months ago and we walked past a doorway that had a notice on saying 'This door does not open, please do not touch.' So we didn't and we walked on. I did think it was a bit strange - didn't think it was there before but I gave it no more thought.

On the way back to the entrance we spoke to two Puzzlewood estate workers who we questioned as to why they were putting up natural wooden fences right by where the unicorn horn was lain. Alas it was because Puzzlewood has now become so popular that the public need to be kept to the designated paths in order to retain the natural plants and beauty of the place and also for insurance puposes.

Alas Merlin fans these fences now stop us actually standing in some of the filmed locations.

The workers then volunteered the information about the doorway we'd passed, and they just happened to say that it was for Merlin filming - and no !!  we had not declared that we were Merlin fans at that time.

So a quick wizz back to the door. No we didn't touch the door as the notice said but we did touch and tap the small greenish bricks round the doorway hey hey polysterene - were we suprised - certainly not after all this is magic Merlin land.

So who is going to live behind this door ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ???????

I've already posted about this in my LJ so apologies to those who have seen it before. A couple of weekends ago we were staying in Stratford-upon-Avon so I thought I would seize the chance to visit the Merlin attraction The Dragon's Tower at Warwick Castle (I've checked with [livejournal.com profile] merlocmod that it counts as a Merlin location).

When we arrived at Warwick Castle we were met by this sight, which I must admit was a bit of a thrill.

Morning, all!

A fellow Locations Geek ♥ has created a Google Map which lists all the locations that are included on the merloc website. You can see my entry about it here.

(I don't know if she's an LJ person, so if you don't mind, I'll refer you to the website page.)

Awesome sauce, eh?! :-D

The good news is that filming - or at least rehearals - for Merlin's fourth season began on 14 March. Hurrah! How better to commemorate that than by visiting a 'genuine' Merlinian location?

the place itself

Stonehenge in Wiltshire is perhaps Britain's most recognisable monument; it is managed by English Heritage, and part of a World Heritage Site. The surrounding area contains a variety of other prehistoric monuments, including barrows, avenues, and other earth-and-timber henges (some of which are managed by the National Trust). Stonehenge itself was apparently intended and used as a temple, oriented to the Summer and Winter Solstices - though we are left with as many questions as answers about exactly who created it, and how and why. (And even the types of lichen growing on the stones present their own mysteries!)

This is the last post resulting from my recent Locations Trip, I promise! (Apologies for the spam.)

We have the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] pakafe to thank for identifying the two locations used at Cannop Ponds. In episode 307 The Castle of Fyrien, our four young characters camp overnight on their way to said castle, and in episode 310 The Queen of Hearts, Arthur and Gwen picnic together. These scenes were filmed in the wooded area where Cannop Brook (or Burn, depending on which map you look at) flows from one pond down to the next. I went to have a look myself last weekend… and came away with something a little more wonderful than photos!

This is an image-heavy post!
