5 friends, 2 dogs (named Merlin and Arthur *lol*) and I went to Wales from 6th - 13th July to hunt down some Merlin filming locations. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] merlinlocations and its fabulous location hunters we had an amazing time and found everything on our list (which wasn't complete at all, but it was a start ^^). And now, that I've completed all the entries of our first Merlin location trip at my livejournal, I'd like to post the links here. :)

Every pic of mine comes with a screenshot of the series, so hopefully everything will be clear. But if there're any questions, I'm more than happy to answer everything I can. :D

Day 1: River Ely, Castell Coch, The Blue Pool, Three Bears Caves
Day 2 + 4: St. Donat's Bay, Dunraven Bay, Margam Country Park, Glastonbury Tor
Day 3: Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Raglan Castle
Day 5 (part 1): Caerphilly Castle
Day 5 (part 2): Comeston Medieval Village, Candleston Castle
Day 6: Goodrich Castle, The Amazing Hedge Puzzle, Speech House Lake
Day 7: Chepstow Castle, Huntsham Court Farm

I think we really did a lot for just one week, but we certainly missed out a lot as well. So, the next trip to Wales is already in the early planning stages. :D
I hope you'll enjoy those entries. :)

Wandering in Wales – a tour of Merlin and Arthurian sites in Wales – April 11-17, 2011

Since I went on a tour of Merlin filming sites over the course of 6 days, I thought it would be a good idea to tell you about options just in case you also want to visit. I'll try and include costs and mileage, etc. Keep in mind that I'm from the States so I'm always astonished at how close everything is!

Thank you for the kind reception of my first batch of Locations icons! I thought I would keep going - though, I don't know... somehow I'm not managing to translate what's in my head into pixels. Anyway, I hope you like these.

And please remember that February isn't over yet! We have had some really beautiful Locations icons posted, and a lovely range of subject and style. But there's always room for more. Please feel free to take part, if you feel at all inclined.

♦ All photos were taken by me. (ETA: Oh, except for #17, which was taken by Mr L.)
♦ #19 is for my dear friend [livejournal.com profile] asifidletyou
♦ Feel free to snag, but comments and credits are love! ♥

Funny what you find when you go surfing the net rather than working...

Below is a link to the website of Dolbadarn Film Horses, a company in Wales that supplied horses during the second season of Merlin. Apparently Bradley rode Rabanete and Colin rode Diablo. There are (unfortunately small, even when you click on them) photos in the gallery, all currently on on the first page. I know the connection is a tad tenuous, but of course all the photos are taken on location, and in particular there is a shot of Arthur dismounting at Goodrich Castle in The Sins of the Father. And I am assuming the dark-cloaked creepy guys are from next Saturday's ep. I'm fascinated by all the behind the scenes stuff, I have to admit!

Enjoy!

ETA: I emailed Dylan Jones at Dolbadarn Film Horses to ask him whether the Merlin team shipped the horses over from Wales to France for filming at Pierrefonds. This is what he kindly replied:

No, we doubled the horses already used in France... The horse master over there is a man called Pascal. Luckily, I had horses which look very similar so that continuity worked.

Thank you, Dylan!

ETA: Another piece of horse-related trivia... In the commentary for episode 204 we discover that Colin's horse in France is named Cora. (Awww...)

It's good to be able to confirm that Goodrich Castle was used in episode 208 The Sins of the Father. They used the location as Morgause's castle.

You heard it here first... or maybe second! A season two episode, not yet shown, used the wonderful Goodrich Castle in Herefordshire as a filming location. Apparently they used the basement of the Solar Block, which you can see in the following photos.

It is a terrific castle to visit, with all kinds of goodies to explore, including an enclosed dungeon, and located on a beautiful site. I am very much looking forward to seeing the results on screen!
