5 friends, 2 dogs (named Merlin and Arthur *lol*) and I went to Wales from 6th - 13th July to hunt down some Merlin filming locations. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] merlinlocations and its fabulous location hunters we had an amazing time and found everything on our list (which wasn't complete at all, but it was a start ^^). And now, that I've completed all the entries of our first Merlin location trip at my livejournal, I'd like to post the links here. :)

Every pic of mine comes with a screenshot of the series, so hopefully everything will be clear. But if there're any questions, I'm more than happy to answer everything I can. :D

Day 1: River Ely, Castell Coch, The Blue Pool, Three Bears Caves
Day 2 + 4: St. Donat's Bay, Dunraven Bay, Margam Country Park, Glastonbury Tor
Day 3: Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Raglan Castle
Day 5 (part 1): Caerphilly Castle
Day 5 (part 2): Comeston Medieval Village, Candleston Castle
Day 6: Goodrich Castle, The Amazing Hedge Puzzle, Speech House Lake
Day 7: Chepstow Castle, Huntsham Court Farm

I think we really did a lot for just one week, but we certainly missed out a lot as well. So, the next trip to Wales is already in the early planning stages. :D
I hope you'll enjoy those entries. :)

Wandering in Wales – a tour of Merlin and Arthurian sites in Wales – April 11-17, 2011

Since I went on a tour of Merlin filming sites over the course of 6 days, I thought it would be a good idea to tell you about options just in case you also want to visit. I'll try and include costs and mileage, etc. Keep in mind that I'm from the States so I'm always astonished at how close everything is!

So… myself and [livejournal.com profile] asifidletyou recently took a long weekend to go on a Locations Tour, at least partially in honour of Bradley’s birthday. For two of the three days we had the most beautiful autumn weather, just perfect, and I got to visit a couple of new places as well as revisit some of my old favourites. There is new info or images below on Wenallt Woods, Pendragon Close and other streets in Cardiff, and Llanwonno Forest.

I’ve included small copies of lots of photos below, along with commentary. If you’d like to see larger versions of the photos, check out my merlinlocations Flickr photostream.

mrs_leary had a few good shots of the pitched stone court at Raglan Castle. That was used for the latest episode (212), The Fires Of Idirsholas.

I come bearing more pictures of the court. :D Behind the cut!

Gosh, what an ep! But taking a deep breath and looking beyond the drama to the locations for a moment... I've got a definite, a probable, and two maybes.

Raglan Castle

We saw a return to Raglan Castle, as foretold by [livejournal.com profile] archaeologist_d . (You go, girl!) When Merlin, Arthur and the Expendable Knights enter the abandoned castle to check out the reports of smoke, that courtyard is the other big open area at Raglan Castle, known as the Pitched Stone Court. (As we all know by now, Merlin's confrontation with Nimueh on The Isle of the Blessed was filmed in Fountain Court just nearby.) You see our heroes coming in through the main gateway, and advancing across the yard.

I recently visited Wales for 2 days and saw 6 filming sites. I wouldn't recommend more than that, although some of them are very close to each other. As someone from the US, driving on the left side was 'fun' but I got used to it. The narrow roads - not so much. But it was well worth the trip.

My posts are image heavy so here are the links. If you don't want links, I'll try and import what I wrote. Just let me know.

Day 1 - Dunraven Bay, Cosmeston Medieval Village and Caerphilly Castle
Day 2 - Speech House Lake, Puzzlewood and Raglan Castle

Thanks so much to everyone who suggested things to see. It helped immensely!

Raglan Castle is a magnificent and imposing ruin. One of its interesting features is a moat around its hexagonal Great Tower (not around the whole castle).

how it's used in Merlin

The episode Le Morte d'Arthur used the Castle to help create the Isle of the Blessed, where Merlin goes to seek a way of saving Arthur using the Old Magic. The episode showed the ruined castle rising from mists on an island in a large lake - I am not sure what lake was used for the image, but the Castle itself is on dry land. The Castle's Great Tower has a moat, which was also used in the episode, as first Merlin and then Gaius are borne to the castle by a magical boat. The confrontations with Nimueh were filmed in the Fountain Court, which was dressed with a circle of standing stones and an altar.
