It's good to be able to confirm that Goodrich Castle was used in episode 208 The Sins of the Father. They used the location as Morgause's castle.

how it's used in Merlin

We see Arthur and Merlin approaching the castle by riding round the 'moat' (which has never had water in it). They then enter via a small doorway and walk up some steps into a chamber where they talk with Morgause. This is the basement of the Solar Block (the main living quarters) with some additional 'ivy' festooned around. I suspect the further chamber where Morgause conjures a vision of Igraine is actually the same place, but with additional columns created via CGI.

I find it interesting to see how the actual locations influence the overall CGI views of the castles, so that Morgause's castle has Goodrich's distinctive towers, and Hengist's castle looked like a recreated Caerphilly. It's not just the immediate location used that affects the show, but also other elements of the sites.

the place itself

The castle is located picturesquely by the River Wye in Herefordshire. It was begun in the late 11th century, and was well maintained and used until its fall during the Civil War in 1647. The only surviving Civil War mortar, known as Roaring Meg, is now located at the castle.

It's a terrific place to explore, with many surviving towers and rooms including a dungeon. The red sandstone of the castle along with the lovely countryside surrounding it, make the whole thing really beautiful.

I really loved scrambling all over this place! I think it's well worth a visit in its own right. I give it a strong four pointy hats.
