Here we are at last, with a proper post on the lovely Dyffryn Gardens!
The estate dates back centuries, but Dyffryn Gardens in particular dates back to 1906, and provides a lovely living example of Edwardian garden design, including an arboretum.
how it's used in Merlin
An oak grove in the arboretum at Dyffryn Gardens was used for Alvarr's camp in the episode The Witch's Quickening. I think that at least one of the pathways through the arboretum was also used - for example, in the brief scene where Alvarr sends Morgana away as the camp is about to be attacked by Arthur and his men.
the place itself
Dyffryn House is closed to the public, but does provide a picturesque centrepiece for the Gardens. There are a number of areas and features in the Gardens, including the open areas of the Croquet Lawn and the Great Lawn, and then a series of 'Garden Rooms' including the Italian Terrace, Mediterranean Garden, Australasian Garden, Cloisters, and so on. Gaius would be particularly appreciative of the Physic Garden. Hey, and there's also tea rooms and a good gift shop. What more could you ask?
I have already posted relevant photos here and here in this community. More general images from the Gardens can be found on this page at the Merlin Locations site.
The following is a copy of the official map, with the filming location marked with a star. In reality, the paths aren't quite as neat as shown on the map, but basically, if you keep following the outer (leftmost) path up through the arboretum, you won't miss the grove.
ETA: A lucky family visited the arboretum while they were filming, and there's a whole lot of photos here on Facebook. Delicious! Thank you to
rodneyscat and
kinseymill for the heads-up.

It's a lovely place worth visiting, and the oak grove is suitably atmospheric. I'll give it four pointy hats!
