I'm proud to launch the Merlin Locations community's first (and possibly only) icons fest! Throughout February 2010 we want your location-related icons. Your creativity, your craft, your 100-squared pixels of art.
ponders...
This notion occurred to me while I was pondering the fact that this (paid) community comes with a number of spaces for userpics - and beyond loading up a default userpic, with perhaps a couple of alternatives, I've never been entirely sure what the point of that might be. I mean, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't use the community userpics when posting, can you? Or indeed when doing anything else. And otherwise they just sit there. Looking (we hope!) pretty.
concludes...
So what I thought we could do is load up the space with location-related icons. They can sit there and look pretty, and be admired by all. They can be available for snagging by those who would like to use them (with credit, of course). And in the meantime we get to have a bit of creative fun while awaiting the third season of Merlin. (As of today, we only have 229 days to go!)
how it works...
♦ Create as few or as many icons as you like, and post them to the
merlinlocations community throughout February 2010. (But try to avoid totally spamming our flists. Enthusiasm is always appreciated, but especially when tempered by common sense!)
♦ The icon must be explicitly related to a BBC Merlin filming location, or to locations geekery. This can include Arthurian locations, and behind-the-scenes or production stuff. However, if you use anything that includes the cast and crew, the focus should remain on the locations rather than on the people (unless it's Dale McCready, cos he's my DoP god, and you should feel free to focus on him all you like). I would love to have a range of icons that include the text 'merlinlocations' or 'Merlin Locations' or 'locations geek'. Otherwise I leave the specific choice of content up to you, whether it's images or text or a combination.
♦ ETA: Feel free to repost the beautiful locations-related icons that you have already made. (Though it would be even more wonderful if you can include some new ones as well.)
♦ When posting, please give credit where it's due. (If I may presume, please take this as permission to use any of my own images, in any way that you like. Well, you know... in any respectful way! And if you need hi-res copies, just ask.)
♦ When posting, always use the tag 'resources: icons'. You may also use other tags (e.g. a specific location or a specific episode) if you feel that's appropriate, but that's up to you.
♦ Please post no more than three icons above the cut! If you need an Icon Table Generator, I always use this one by
sql_girl.
♦ The general idea is that all the icons submitted during the fest will be available for others to use - with credit given to the creator. If that doesn't suit you, please let me know or make it explicit in your post, but I hope you'll all be happy with this approach.
♦ The icons must be usable on LiveJournal - i.e. they should be no more than 100 px by 100 px and 40kb in size, and in either JPEG, GIF or PNG file formats.
what happens next...
♦ We'll enjoy the posts throughout the month! Admiring comments will be welcomed by the iconographers!
♦ At the end of the month, we'll be 28 days closer to the third season. Hurrah!
♦ In early March, I will upload all the icons received to the community's Userpics page. If you want to suggest suitable keywords, please do so. (I am thinking some kind of consistent approach, such as: 'location name - username of creator - theme - dominant colour or feel or detail'. But obviously that will depend a bit on what we receive.) The 'comment' for each icon will include at least credit to the creator.
♦ I am happy to buy more 'add-on userpic space' if we need it, because I'd love to display all the icons we make. However, if we get so many entries that even that's not enough space, then I'll ask a couple of friends to help me select what seems like the best range of location-related icons. In any case, we will include at least one icon from everyone who participates. (I'm leaving this a bit vague, because while it's a problem I'd love to face, I have no idea if we'll have anywhere near that many icons submitted.) The thing to emphasise here is that this last step is certainly not intended to belatedly turn this into a competition. It's a fest! I hope everyone participates in one way or another!
over to you...
Your comments and queries are always welcome. And I'll look forward to seeing your brilliant work!

Date: 2010-02-01 09:43 pm (UTC)I'm so glad you agree about Dale - I know of your penchant for DPs, so I was almost too nervous to ask, just in case I was wrong wrong wrong. But it was working with all those screencaps for the Gaius icons that really brought home to me what a god he is...
Thank you again! I'm delighted to have your support. ♥

Date: 2010-02-01 09:46 pm (UTC)I think you should feel free to re-post your lovely locations icons, but perhaps mention that they're being reposted...? And of course we'd love to see some new ones as well.
Thank you for commenting, and I'll look forward to seeing your work. ♥

Date: 2010-02-01 09:51 pm (UTC)I'd be absolutely delighted if you participated. Like most creative things, I think we learn best by doing - and I am certainly still a learner with icons, but I intend to inflict mine upon you all! {insert evil laughter here} I'd love to see what you come up with, and I'm sure you have lots of wonderful images you can draw upon. ♥
