It's now September, and our latest icon fest is officially closed... but please don't let that stop you! We will always be glad to see icons posted here that celebrate not only our beautiful filming locations, but also our heroes behind the camera. Indeed, if you want to contribute a late entry, there's probably time to do so!
Thank you so much to those who took part by contributing icons to the fest:
1nagromniloc ,
archaeologist_d ,
chayiana ,
gealach_ros ,
yavannauk and, well, me! :-D You all created really beautiful and interesting icons, and I was delighted to see them.
I don't know if I'll have the chance to upload the icons to our Userpics page before I head for Pierrefonds, but I will try.
I have been thinking about what's appropriate to upload to an entry on the Merlin Locations website, and here's what I've come up with as a working approach.
I will upload those icons that:
♦ use either our own photos (i.e. taken by the iconographer or by a
merlinlocations member), or screencaptures of broadcast material, or photos that are available publically (e.g. those I used from Dale's official website); and
♦ feature producers or crew who are already well known and in the public eye (e.g. producers, directors, Dale, Andreas, Big J), or include otherwise anonymous crew members as part of a general scene.
However, I won't upload icons to the website that:
♦ use our own privately-taken photos, and focus exclusively on an otherwise anonymous crew member.
I know that, strictly speaking, these people were all in a public space, and by the letter of the law (such as it is) we are entitled to take photos of them and circulate them. However, it seems like crossing the line a bit to then make icons of them and so on. If we're making icons from publically available material, then we can assume the subjects of the images have consented to those images being broadcast. However, we can't make the same assumption about photos we've taken personally.
If anyone thinks I'm being wrongheaded about this, or inconsistent - or indeed has a better idea - I'd love to hear it and will adjust to suit! But that's what I've come up with, thinking thinky thoughts on my own. :-D
Thank you again to everyone who participated in the fest, with icons or comments or general enthusiasm. You all totally rock! ♥
ETA: I have now uploaded the icons - or most of them! I started by sorting the icons into those I would post to the website and those I wouldn't, in line with the approach detailed above. It's a privacy issue, yes? I'm sure you'll understand. Anyway, by the time I'd uploaded the first batch to our Userpics page, I'd used up most of the second of two extra icons packages I've bought - and I still had well over 30 icons waiting in the second batch. It wasn't so much the expense that stopped me, as the thought that we will no doubt have other icon fests in the future, and there seems little point in uploading icons now if we're only going to have to {sniff} delete them later to make room for more. So I left it as is. If anyone has any serious objections to this, then please let me know via comment or PM!
I have since uploaded the first batch of icons to a new entry on the website. You can find it here. For those of you with icons, you might like to double-check that I've credited everything correctly. If anyone wants anything changed here, please let me know.
Thank you!
