You'll remember (or not!) this post about the lake in France near Compiegne which featured in episode 208 The Sins of the Father…? Well, when we were visiting Pierrefonds in September,
asifidletyou and I decided to try to track down the exact location. And we succeeded, despite the rain, and thanks to the patience of our chauffeur, the redoubtable Mr L. We celebrated with saucisse for dinner!
Etang de Carandeau actually consists of four lakes: what seems to be a natural one between the river and the road, and then what seem to be three created ones south of the road. The lake to the north is privately owned and fenced off, though you can walk down past it to the river if you like. It occurs to me that if the three lakes to the south were created, perhaps they were fish farms. That would explain why they are still local fishing spots, and why the lake was shallow and level enough for the crew to not only erect the scaffolding from which to film, but also for Bradley and Colin to ride their horses a fair distance out.
As can be expected, the filming location itself is easily accessible from the carpark. Once you're at the carpark, and as you're facing the lake, there's a broad paved pathway leading off to the left; follow it and you'll soon see the location opening up on your right.

I didn't get any really useful shots while at the exact location, but I took the following when we followed the paths around to the right from the carpark, looking back across the lake at the location.

It's easy enough to find, and not far out of the way if you're driving between Compiegne and Pierrefonds. There's nothing else to do there (unless you have a fishing rod!) but why not take it in, if you can, on your next trip to 'Camelot'? I think I'll stick with three pointy hats!
