This community, the website, and indeed the whole Merlin Locations thing, grew quite randomly. For me it all started with a visit to Puzzlewood and Speech House Lake on 25 April 2009; I fell in love with both in different ways. I thought that only a few people might share my interest in these places - not only for their own sake, I mean, but as filming locations for our beloved Merlin. I was astonished and happy to be wrong about that!
From there I investigated the obvious locations such as the Chateau de Pierrefonds, and also other more obscure locations when prompted by clues in DVD extras such as the video diaries or by information provided by fellow Locations Geeks. It was all pretty random. But I always thought we should at some stage start at the beginning, and go through the episodes in a more systematic way. Also, it seemed that people enjoyed my weekly updates on each episode's locations during the third and fourth seasons. Hence the first of these 'rewatch' posts on the website.
You can view the post here. But please be warned it's very very image-heavy!

Date: 2012-01-02 11:04 am (UTC)I haven't rewatched the first episode since going to Pierrefonds and I'm ashamed to say I never noticed that the town had changed places!
And I didn't remember that there were so many shots of the beautiful castle in that first episode. Must rewatch!
I've been there lots of times now and you have to believe the actors when they say that Pierrefonds doesn't lose its magic. I'm in awe each single time.
Edited to add: the Salle des Preuses truly is magnificent. I still remember my reaction the first time I stepped in it and realised that it was exactly as it is in the show, no CGI. My mouth was hanging open for the longest time, lol.
And I hadn't realised either that we never see again that very beautiful banquet hall. But I understand why it was way more practical for them to shoot the banquets at Pierrefonds.
Didn't know that the studio sets were first in Surrey, either.
What gratuitous caps? It was all necessary to the plot :o)

Date: 2012-01-25 08:47 pm (UTC)I'm delighted that the post made you want to rewatch the episode itself! It was indeed magic, and watching it in this much detail really brought home to me how very well made and professional our show is. They aim for filmic, and I really think they get there! ♥

Date: 2012-01-02 11:18 am (UTC)I've never been to Pierrefonds in the beginning, so, I never saw the town set, where it was back then. And although I surely realised that it was mainly at the car park (and not where it is now), I never recognised that Merlin's and Arthur's fight actually took place in the gift shop (or the place that was supposed to become the gift shop ^^). Thanks a lot for this epiphany!!! :D
Oh, and I really appreciated the random, not location-related shots of Colin! LOL.
Looking forward to your other re-watch posts!

Date: 2012-01-25 09:04 pm (UTC)I am pretty sure the town set was out the front only for the first season, or even just part of it. We'll work that out for sure as we rewatch the first season! :-) Next time I run into one of those few lucky souls who happened to visit Pierrefonds during that first year before we knew about the magic, I'll have to ask them about it. :-D
I'll do a post for the second episode just as soon as I can... and I am sure it will feature another gratuitous shot or two... ♥
