We had our first Magical Merlin Locations Tour on Tuesday. Joining me were our own [livejournal.com profile] archaeologist_d, Bess from the merloc website, and various camp followers. Our destination was the undercroft at Neath Abbey, used in filming two episodes of Merlin - and not generally open to the public. Indeed, I had to fill out forms and pay a fee and organise insurance - which was a rather interesting process, given that Merlin's Locations Manager would have to do pretty much the same when organising a shoot.

how it's used in Merlin

The undercroft was used in episode 202 The Once and Future Queen as the crypt where we find King Odin mourning his son. And then it was used again for episode 313 The Coming of Arthur as the hall in which we find the Round Table.

This post is very image intense!

ETA: And belated thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gealach_ros who found this location for us in the first place! ♥

Our resident Research Geek [livejournal.com profile] gealach_ros was clever enough to track down Neath Abbey as the probable location for King Odin's castle in episode 202 The Once and Future Queen, and posted about it here. Thank you, hon! ♥

The Abbey is managed by Cadw - who have since been kind enough to confirm via email that our Merlin crew did indeed film there on 23 March 2009. Hurrah! So, I went to visit the site on the weekend.

I'm not sure but I think it might be that I found the location they used for Odin's Castle at the beginning of episode 02.02 The Once and Future Queen. :D
I also found a rather cool and really awesome website that could help to find/identify Welsh locations a bit easier.

We may not know some of these details until the DVDs come out - with audio commentaries that happen to mention locations, if we're lucky! - but in the meantime...

The opening scenes of The Once and Future Queen showed King Odin grieving for his son in the vaulted crypt or undercroft of his castle. Does anyone have an idea of where the scene was filmed? A large empty vaulted space like that - with rather high ceilings - was very striking. My tentative working theory is a castle in Wales - perhaps Caerphilly? Wikipedia says that Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch have undercrofts, though I'm not aware of any filming happening in either - yet. I didn't see anything like this space at Pierrefonds - though naturally you can't get everywhere, so it may be part of what's left of the original medieval castle there.

Anyway, all ideas welcome, and I (or someone else!) can do a proper post once we know for sure. Thank you kindly!

P.S. I used to never be able to remember how to spell 'medieval', but it's just engraved in my mind now. See, it may be a kids show, but Merlin has taught me stuff.
